After one week in Italy, this is what I know..

1. There are a lot of steps and hills. We walked 6 -7 miles a day. Bring small 20” carry-ons and protect them with plastic covers.

2. The roads are very windy and altitudes are high. Bring Dramamine.

3. If you can afford to rent a driver or bait for the day, do that to avoid hours long lines for public transportation.

4. You need comfortable sneakers. Activewear isn’t as popular for day time in Europe so we wore Reef casual sneakers the most. Rubber sole sandals are fine but ruins are dusty and streets can be dirty so keep that in mind.

5. Download Express VPN so your phone doesn’t switch to a foreign language. This will mark your IP address to USA so it stays in English.

6. I commented everyday on how happy I was to have my FP sling bag. It was comfortable and held my water, phone, passport, wallet, makeup bag, charger, travel toilet paper, portable charger and still had room for more.

7. Wear light clothing. It’s HOT and you’re on the go. Activewear isn’t popular for daytime wear there, nor are Jean shorts. We wore a lot of maxi dresses and rompers.

8. Bring toilet paper! I saved myself three times and a few strangers on occasion.

9. Put air tags in everything… your passport, suitcases, purses. Lost luggage and pick pockets are common.

10. For chargers, I love the three in one with multiple ports and then the specific converter linked here for my American products.

**Im also glad I didn’t bring my younger children. I feel like touring is too physically demanding and the appreciation for history is not quite there yet. I saw more moms broken down with strollers and worn out kids more often than not.

Celebrate summer like we did in Sweden with the traditional strawberry cake and pastel maxi dresses. (My yellow tiered dress was from Saylor 2023 Pink Lemonade print. Google for options.)

SWEDISH STRAWBERRY CAKE

For the cake:
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk

For the cream cheese frosting:
8 ounces full-fat brick style cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3 cups (350g) confectioners’ sugar
1 – 2 Tablespoons heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch salt

For the filling:
1/2 cup strawberry jam
2 cups fresh strawberries

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F Grease and lightly flour two cake pans.

Mix butter until creamy. Add both sugars, eggs, vanilla, and beat on medium speed until everything is combined.

In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Add the milk.

Bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before assembling the cake.

For the frosting:

Beat cream cheese and butter together. Add confectioners’ sugar, 1 or 2 Tablespoons cream, vanilla extract and salt.

For the filling and assembling the cake:

Trim the tops off the cake layers to create a flat surface. Evenly cover one layer with the jam, then add a layer of sliced strawberries, and one layer of cream cheese frosting. Do the same with second layer then cover the entire top with strawberries.
